What the Amateurs meme means
The source comic personified successive years competing over celebrity deaths. Meme use is a one-upmanship escalation; its origin is dark, but remixes can use harmless contests.
Two-part comparison macro from Shen Comix: first slot states an ordinary brag or hardship; second slot gives a participant who vastly outdoes it, traditionally capped with 'Amateurs.'
How the joke works
Slot 1 makes a modest claim; slot 2 introduces a more extreme entrant or experience that makes the first look quaint. Escalate clearly and keep both items in the same comparison category.
- Modest first claim.
- Clearly more extreme counterclaim or entrant.
Caption examples
- I stayed up until 1 a.m. finishing the quest
- I saw the sunrise and the credits twice
The completionist exaggeration clearly one-ups an ordinary late night.
- My power went out for an hour
- Amateurs: their house burned down
It makes a serious disaster into a bragging contest.
Situations it fits
- two levels of staying up late
- a tiny game grind versus an absurd completionist run
- mild procrastination versus an elaborate avoidance ritual
- one snack versus a truly ridiculous snack stack
When this format does not fit
- Escalation unrelated to the first claim
- Using a real tragedy as a competitive brag
- Second slot is milder than first
- Too many details for two compact labels
