Derp Meme Template
Make the face’s vacant expression the payoff to a harmless lapse in logic. Put the mistaken thought or overconfident action first, then the obvious consequence, correction, or delayed realization. The speaker can be the butt of the joke: confidently searching for the phone while holding it, or forgetting why they opened a tab. Keep it about a specific mistake rather than calling a real person stupid.

Cartoon rage-comic face with vacant upward gaze and slight smile.
How the joke works
Clueless assumption or action → obvious consequence / self-own.
- State the silly assumption, plan, or action.
- Reveal its obvious consequence or the speaker’s belated realization.
Caption examples
- I put my phone down so I wouldn’t lose it
- Now I can’t remember where I put my phone
- My coworker is an idiot
- A face with funny eyes (describes rather than uses the format)
Situations it fits
- autocorrect mishap
- walking into a room and forgetting why
- misreading an obvious label
When this format does not fit
- Bullying an identifiable person as unintelligent
- No logical link between the mistake and payoff
- Using the face as proof of a person’s actual ability
