Help Me Obi Wan, You're Our Only Hope. Meme Template
The format is based on Princess Leia’s holographic plea in the 1977 film Star Wars: Episode IV – A New Hope. Know Your Meme records the catchphrase/image macro in 2011 and describes parodies as calls for assistance, sincere or ironic; its spread section traces earlier parodies including a 1997 Saturday Night Live sketch and a 2009 Phineas and Ferb episode. Users adapt the plea to ask a person, tool, service, or unlikely solution for help, often with “you’re my only hope” as an exaggerated dependency punchline. The active image depicts Leia’s hologram; the film scene has Luke discover the message in R2-D2.

The active 518×387 template shows Princess Leia as a small blue hologram, centered in a dark scene. The runtime provides two caption bands: one across the upper edge and one along the bottom. They match the two-part plea associated with the scene, rather than separate characters or sequential reactions.
How the joke works
Use the upper caption for a concise plea that identifies the helper or the urgent task (“Help me, [helper/task]”). Use the lower caption to complete or heighten the dependence (“you’re my only hope” or a fitting variation). The lines should form one request, with the bottom supplying the dramatic reliance or ironic overstatement. It can be sincere for an actual request or comic when the stakes are mundane; make the intended scale clear.
- The plea or call for help, naming the helper, tool, or task at issue.
- The completion or punchline that makes the helper the speaker’s only hope.
Caption examples
- HELP ME, BUILD PIPELINE BEFORE THE BOARD REVIEW.
- YOU’RE MY ONLY HOPE, CI CHECKS.
The first line makes a clear request and the second exaggerates reliance on the named tool.
- YOU’RE MY ONLY HOPE.
- HELP ME FIND THE FILE.
The canonical request/payoff order is reversed.
Situations it fits
- Playfully asking a specific coworker or tool to rescue a task at the last minute
- Dramatically depending on one small convenience for an everyday problem
- Making a sincere appeal for assistance with a clear named helper
- Showing that a team has one remaining option, with humorous overstatement
When this format does not fit
- Use an unrelated lower line that does not complete or heighten the plea.
- Put the resolution first and the request second.
- Make both lines long enough to obscure the simple two-part appeal.
- Use “only hope” literally for emergencies where exaggerated meme humor would be insensitive.
