What the Deep Thoughts meme means

A color wildlife close-up shows a gorilla looking slightly upward, with one hand resting under its chin. The softly blurred background keeps attention on its pensive expression. The supplied image has no baked-in text; the current editor places one caption above it and one below it.
How the joke works
Slot 1, above the image, introduces a question or first-stage thought. Slot 2, below the image, extends the same line of reasoning into a deeper, more elaborate, unexpected, or comically overthought implication. Keep both captions on the same subject; the gorilla’s solemn expression supplies the deadpan mood. The second thought should add something rather than merely answer, repeat, or restate the first.
- Top caption: introduce a question, observation, or first-stage thought that invites reflection.
- Bottom caption: continue the same reasoning with a deeper, more specific, surprising, or comically overthought implication.
Caption examples
- The calendar says the release is Friday.
- But whose Friday if the build finishes after midnight in another time zone?
The top line begins with an ordinary fact; the lower line extends it into a specific, amusingly overthought ambiguity.
- The feature is ready for launch.
- Ship it now.
This is a direct decision followed by an instruction, with no deeper thought, escalation, or ironic turn.
Situations it fits
- Overthinking a small ambiguity in a routine decision
- Following a product or engineering observation into an unexpectedly deep implication
- Turning an ordinary daily question into playful philosophical musing
When this format does not fit
- Do not make the two captions unrelated; slot-2 must follow from the thought in slot-1.
- Do not use a simple instruction or status update with no reflective turn.
- Do not repeat the first caption or give an obvious answer that adds no new thought.
- Do not present a made-up claim about gorilla cognition as a fact; the meme anthropomorphizes the expression for humor.
