Fantasy Painting Meme Template
The artwork is fan art depicting Yhorm the Giant and the Ashen One from Dark Souls III, rather than official game art. Know Your Meme traces the original image to a Pixiv upload by user Tatsuya on March 23, 2016 (Pixiv artwork 55975367). The illustration later became a meme template within the broader “Fantasy Painting Object Labeling” format; KYM notes its spread on Imgflip in 2019. The visual scale difference makes it useful for dramatizing an overwhelming obstacle or power imbalance. Although the CSV mentions Souls-like games broadly, this exact scene is specifically associated with Dark Souls III characters.

A tall, dramatic fantasy illustration shows Yhorm the Giant, a towering armored figure glowing with ember-orange cracks and holding a huge weapon, facing a tiny red-cloaked armored warrior with a sword near the bottom-left amid rubble. The two active caption regions are placed over the upper giant and lower knight areas, respectively.
How the joke works
Slot 1 (upper region over the giant) labels the overwhelming obstacle, opponent, demand, or force. Slot 2 (lower region by the tiny knight) labels the underdog facing it: the speaker, a small team, a limited resource, or a modest attempt. Make the relationship between the two labels immediately clear and visibly disproportionate. The comedy comes from giving an everyday problem epic boss-fight scale; the knight can read as brave, doomed, or stubbornly determined.
- Upper caption over the giant: label the large threat, obstacle, demand, or dominant force.
- Lower caption over the small knight: label the underdog, limited effort, or person facing that force.
Caption examples
- THE Q4 FEATURE LIST
- OUR TWO-PERSON ENGINEERING TEAM
The two labels set up a clear scale mismatch between a large workload and the small team facing it.
- A KNIGHT
- A LARGE PERSON
These captions merely describe the image and do not establish a meaningful obstacle or underdog relationship.
Situations it fits
- a small team confronting a much larger competitor or task
- a modest effort facing a huge workload or intimidating deadline
- one resource or person overwhelmed by a powerful system
- dramatically exaggerating a minor everyday challenge as a boss fight
When this format does not fit
- Do not reverse the scale roles without making a deliberate, legible subversion; the upper giant normally represents the dominant force and lower knight the underdog.
- Do not describe this as official Dark Souls artwork; the cited source identifies it as fan art.
- Do not make the labels unrelated; the small figure should face or be outmatched by the large one.
- Do not claim this is a generic image from Elden Ring or Bloodborne; the specific characters are Yhorm and the Ashen One from Dark Souls III.
