Since When Were You Under The Impression Meme Template

From Bleach chapter 392 (anime episode 293): the captains think they have finally stabbed Aizen, but it is Momo Hinamori, because he had them hypnotized by Kyōka Suigetsu all along. Asked how long the illusion was active, he asks since when they thought it wasn't. Anime fans turned it into the go-to smug villain reversal: you calmly reveal the other person's assumption was never true. Used for I-never-cared roasts, bait reveals, plot-twist dunks, and coping fandoms. Aizen is never surprised; he knew the whole time.

What the Since When Were You Under The Impression meme means

From Bleach chapter 392 (anime episode 293): the captains think they have finally stabbed Aizen, but it is Momo Hinamori, because he had them hypnotized by Kyōka Suigetsu all along. Asked how long the illusion was active, he asks since when they thought it wasn't. Black-and-white Bleach manga panel: Sōsuke Aizen, half his face in shadow, looks down with a calm, smug stare. The right speech bubble is pre-printed with "Since when were you under the impression that…"; the empty left bubble is the one caption slot and finishes his sentence.

How the joke works

Read the printed right bubble first, then the left. Slot 1 finishes the printed question with the exact belief being shattered, written as the continuation of the sentence and usually ending in a question mark. The reader supplies the reveal: that belief was never true. Funniest when the belief is something the target obviously, confidently held, said back in two to eight words.

  1. Empty left bubble: finish the printed stem with the target's false belief, as a sentence fragment ending in a question mark. Never repeat the stem.

Caption examples

Example that works
  1. I WAS GOING TO TEXT BACK?

Finishes the printed question with a belief the reader actually held; Aizen's calm stare does the rest.

Example that misses
  1. SINCE WHEN WERE YOU UNDER THE IMPRESSION THAT THE SEQUEL WOULD BE GOOD

Repeats the stem already printed in the right bubble and overflows the small left bubble.

Situations it fits

  • someone assuming you actually cared about their opinion
  • a situationship assuming you were exclusive
  • the group chat believing you would actually show up
  • fans coping that a dead anime or franchise was coming back
  • a gacha game convincing players the drop rates were fair
  • your friend thinking you were sober at the pregame
  • someone falling for obvious bait in the replies
  • a villain-tier ex revealing the whole relationship was a side quest

When this format does not fit

  • Repeating the printed stem inside the left bubble.
  • Cramming a separate setup and punchline into one bubble.
  • A belief nobody actually holds, so there is nothing to shatter.
  • Making Aizen the one who got fooled; he always knew.
  • A full sentence longer than about ten words; the bubble is small.
